An Kindness of People We Don't Know: The Way a Man I Barely Knew Assisted Me Land the Role That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a friend. Because my friend was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had planned a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side named International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the dining hall, where we grabbed food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I my profession was, and I explained that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I should apply for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, saying that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The engineering student came up to me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but immediately told my interviewer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she said: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I am unaware of his identity, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in multiple respects. I would never have had the confidence or nerve to contact anyone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. Additionally, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university resulted in a role in Europe where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I now have a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
