Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he added. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
