The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
