Federal authorities has entered the fray in a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
