Roughly fifty automobiles have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Police say they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then located multiple other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests suggest the liquid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; officials are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they stated.
City officials said they were working "to unravel the incident" and have requested to the residents for details.
A high-ranking representative said the incident rendered him speechless and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he stated on online, referring to the death of nine people by a shooter aiming at individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
